Be Strict With Yourself, Lenient With Others
Be Strict With Yourself - Lead by Example
- Carve out time to focus on high priority tasks
- Take extra care to do things the proper way, with discipline, so that your work is done well and delivered with the confidence that you did your best
- Talk about your day and what you did with your kids. You always ask them what they did and they resist you on it. Maybe if you take more time out to talk about yourself, they will follow suit.
Be Lenient With Others - What Behavior in Others Infuriates You?
Complaining! It's particularly vexing to hear persistent complaints from others.
How can you go easier on complainers?
- Discuss philosophy to offer perspective. A "Memento Mori" mindset can alleviate the cycle of complaints.
- For the kids, create systems that reward positive behavior and discourage complaints.
Self-Accountable
What do you make excuses for yourself on? What steps can you take to be harder on yourself?
Not getting any technical work done. You tend to excuse yourself saying "I have too many administrative duties". While you cannot take on the lowest tasks and be the biggest individual contributor on the team, you need to at least stay current and lead from the front. You should not make excuses when my technical output slows to a crawl and the small tasks you take responsibility for do not get completed. What can you do about it? You already get up early and get to work before everyone. You have to maintain a good work/life balance because you have a family. You should utilize your Eisenhower Matrix task board more, as well as the 3-3-3, and pomodoro techniques. Avoid the urgent and unimportant things that keep popping up. Focus more on the important and non-urgent matters.
